Gabriela López, coordinator of the Sira Center, has traveled with Novact and Centre Iridia to Brussels to present the results of the report to the European Parliament. “Human rights violations on the Southern Border of the Spanish State 2021-2022 – Institutional racism, borders and migration policy.”. In this document, Gabriela, along with Andrea Galán, dedicate a chapter to the psychosocial impacts suffered by people on the move who arrive in the territory.
Together with MEPs Miguel Ubran and Marta Mateos, both from the LEFT-EU group, Iridia, Novact, and Sir[a], the Working Group presented the report's findings on Wednesday, June 28, outlining the psychological and psychosocial impacts of borders on migrants. The Working Group called on Parliament to investigate the events of June 24, 2022, in Melilla, where 77 disappearances, 37 deaths, and countless injuries have already been documented. They also called for a legal framework to guarantee fundamental rights at borders and prevent people from being exposed to serious risks to their safety when crossing borders.
Meetings to denounce human rights violations
Last Tuesday, the 27th, the working group also held a meeting with the European External Action Service and the Migration and Home Affairs group (DG Home) to present the main human rights violations at the southern border and to put forward recommendations on how to address migration. The group also raised its concerns regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. Furthermore, the entities also met with Member of the European Parliament Damien Carême, from the Greens/European Free Alliance (EFA) group.
