Living with dignity: Collective experiences in the face of loss of housing and expulsion from the home.

Once again, in commemoration of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Sira Center is organizing a roundtable discussion to reflect on issues related to torture and/or ill-treatment. This year, we will focus on the psychosocial impacts of housing violence and the various forms of displacement experienced by individuals and groups systemically and across multiple territories. This event will highlight how housing is not merely a physical space, but a place of control, security, and dignity. When access to housing is denied through evictions, demolitions, forced displacement, real estate harassment, or institutional neglect, among other means, people's safety and health are compromised, severely impacting their life plans.

Therefore, the meeting will bring together collective experiences of resistance and defense in contexts where serious human rights violations have occurred, linked to different territories and struggles: residents affected by Metro Line 7B, the Firefighters' Platform Against Evictions, residents affected by urban planning policies in Cañada Real, and residents organized against real estate harassment in Lavapiés (Tribulete). Through this dialogue, we will address how these forms of violence impact individual and community life projects, as well as the forms of mutual support, organization, and resistance that emerge in the face of displacement and expulsion. The day will also include a theatrical performance by CCIC La Tortuga.
