Omar's arrest was recounted in vivid detail. These were epic, cinematic tales of law enforcement breaking down doors, cracking passwords, blocking streets, confiscating CDs, and even weapons. Nothing like what we would hear from the protagonist himself years later.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To make the second episode of Gaps<\/strong>, With Llu\u00eds we spent many hours digging in the newspaper archive<\/strong>. We were looking for information about a Moroccan Muslim man who had been accused of indoctrination several years ago, and whom the justice system had kept in pretrial detention for almost three years. Isolation regime<\/strong>, despite being innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We knew the story very well<\/strong>. The Sira Center has been linked to this person for many years, whether through the therapeutic support provided at the time or through the expert reports prepared for his lawsuit against the State<\/strong><\/a>. However, it wasn't until we started working on the episode that Llu\u00eds and I became truly aware of the frivolity <\/strong>with which some media outlets reported her case. Some of the information published at the time was so serious that we chose a pseudonym <\/strong>to protect their identity, and not to further contribute to damaging their image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201d"In Omar's case, some media outlets not only contributed to justifying the incredible harshness with which he was being arrested and then imprisoned; but they also did their part to continue feeding an Islamophobic imaginary that sees symptoms of radicalization in everything related to religious practice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Omar's arrest was reported in full detail<\/strong>. These are epic, cinematic tales in which law enforcement officers break down doors, crack passwords, block off streets, confiscate CDs, and weapons. Nothing like what we would hear years later from the mouth of... protagonist<\/strong>That what was actually confiscated were music CDs, decorative katanas, and a coaching book by basketball coach Pepu Hern\u00e1ndez; that during this movie-like arrest, a gun was pointed at his children; that he was paraded in front of his neighbors and coworkers like a trophy; that, by mistake, his neighbor's door was broken down first, and then his own. The day Omar was declared innocent There are hardly any chronicles<\/strong>. Articles about the impact of spending three years in pretrial detention on him? More of the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those who wrote the chronicles of that movie-like arrest, there are some very well-known figures who made a career serving as messengers for the police version, and also for the far right. But this is anecdotal.<\/strong>. To our astonishment, we found that some of the media outlets that tend to be more critical or dedicate more effort to verifying information also had no qualms about reproducing the official version<\/strong>. When the message concerns national security or terrorism, there are no "buts," because it aligns with their Islamophobic imaginary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researcher and anti-racist and decolonial activist, Salma Amazian<\/strong><\/a>, The episode points out that wearing a veil, growing a beard, or even joining a gym are interpreted as actions that only reinforce a deeply ingrained paranoia. The premise is that Muslim religiosity is linked to violence and incompatible with life in the West. Therefore, any "symptom" that implies a closer connection to the religion is also seen as embracing violence. How else can one explain the fact that at the time of Omar's arrest there was such a clear consensus among the police, the justice system, and the media that he was a terrorist, even though there was no evidence?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Omar's case, some media outlets not only helped justify the incredible harshness with which he was arrested and subsequently imprisoned, but also played their part in further fueling an Islamophobic narrative that sees signs of radicalization in everything related to religious practice. With varying degrees of influence, whether through Twitch or print, the media continues to be a significant mechanism in shaping these narratives. common imaginaries<\/strong>, now it's time to tell us what it is the dangerous <\/strong>and what is the important thing<\/strong>. As Salma points out in the episode, the media has here an enormous responsibility<\/strong>Simply serving as a mouthpiece for the official version only strengthens or legitimizes the use of violence against everything that the State perceives as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the episode, our protagonist hints at many of the impacts he suffers as a consequence of having spent so much time in prison. Among his worries, uncertainty about the future remains. He wonders what his children will think about his story when they grow up, if they ever stumble upon the same archives we found.\u201cWill they feel humiliated? Or will they feel proud that despite everything I was able to reach the end?<\/strong>\u201d"She wonders.
