After the screening of the documentary "The Stork of Burgos", we chatted with its director Joana Conill about memory and antifascism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the screening of the documentary \u201cThe Stork of Burgos\u201d, its director, Joana Conill<\/strong>, spoke with the coordinator of the Sira Center, Gabriela L\u00f3pez Neyra<\/strong>, around the main themes that the film revolves around: memory, silence and the need to break it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The documentary traces Joana's quest to understand her father's path and past, while also serving as a portrait of the anti-Franco struggle against the regime. "I reclaim the memory of an absolutely cruel and atrocious repression and how to heal this great social wound that affects us all," the director states.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201d"When you are suffering, the impulse is to share it."<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Jordi, Joana's father, was a member of the Communist Party who, during the dictatorship, was part of the armed opposition that plotted to assassinate the dictator. As a result, he was arrested, tortured, imprisoned, and sentenced to death by a Court Martial<\/strong>. Finally, his sentence was commuted thanks to international pressure. The film tells the story of Joana's journey to uncover the darkest and brightest episodes of her father's life, whose biography was kept hidden from her by her family for years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Stork of Burgos<\/a>\u201dThis is an exercise in which Joana reorders her memories to get closer to her father, but also to get to know herself and connect with her own pain, as the daughter of an anarchist and anti-Francoist family. In this sense, Joana affirms that the documentary was born not only as an attempt to get closer to her father and herself, but also from a need to break the silence. \u201dWhen you are suffering, the impulse is to share it. What makes the situation more bearable is being able to share it with others. I needed my friends to know who I was,\u201d the documentary filmmaker explains.
